The Oh Shit! Factor

The Oh Shit! Factor is what happens every night when we walk into our bedroom and stumble across giant cockroaches or lizards or spiders or ants or FROGS. Last night it was a frog, just hangin out. This frog was the size of a small dog. Think Bert.

My guess is that we are being bombarded with bugs because of the massive rain storm we have had over the last 3 days. So, every night we do a bug check. One of us pushes open the bedroom door and hits on the light and then we wait. We are never disappointed. Inevitably, one of us will yell "Oh shit" because we have happened upon some gnarly critter that definitely should not be hanging around our bed. Or, for example, this morning. Thinking we were safe, I grabbed a roll of toilet paper off the shelf and put my hand in the cardboard roll. Bad idea? Bad idea if you don't want a cockroach running down your arm. Even our toilet paper isn't safe. Not to mention the fact that there are roaches crawling around the kitchen when we eat and lizards all over the bathroom walls when we take or cold showers on dirty tiles. Fun? A good experience? Yes. But not for those who don't like bugs, and neither of us do.

Typical 6" diameter spider found all over Fiji's jungles:

And finally, the worst bug of all. The bug that entered my stomach a few nights ago and refused to let me leave the bathroom floor (and this is not a bathroom floor that any one would want to hang around). This bug kept me in bed for many hours. Alec may now have the bug. Walking into town today, he had to stop on the side of the road and go deep into the bushes to empty out his stomach... In Fiji, you do what you have to do.
