More About Food...

The family eating a special soup in honor of a 5 yr. old's first haircut:

So, for those of you who are wondering, Alec and I are doing are best to cope with Fiji's food situation. Let me be clear by insuring you all that we are certainly not starving. In fact, we are fed many meals a day. However, we have tried to venture out into a world beyond taro and cassava and Maggi-Noodle. This world is contained in the 2 block stretch of Savusavu's "downtown," which features approximately 4 restaurants, multiple grocery stores, and a couple of hole-in-the-wall fast food places, such as Chong Pong's Chinese food (which we are afraid to even inquire about).

In our quest for food outside of Fijian home-cooking we have been thoroughly disappointed. Already, at least a quarter of the restaurants have been deemed terrible; worse, much worse, even than the food we are served for free at home. And yesterday, we trekked all the way into town to visit the "decked out cafe" which features pizza and fish and chips on its menu. Our cheese pizza was not really a cheese pizza. It was more of a sweet dough with a few crumbles of virtually flavorless cheese and some tomato sauce. Disappointing, to say the least. Our one accomplishment so far has been today's 6 mile run into town, finished off with a liter of chocolate ice cream purchased at the market. Ice cream, it turns out, is good wherever you are.

The "Captain's Cafe," our favorite place to eat in Savusavu (and quite pretty too!):

In short, we have decided to more or less stick with home-cooked Fijian food because at least, for our sake, it doesn't cost anything.
