It's time now for Adventure round II: New Zealand. We arrived in Auckland yesterday afternoon, after a whirlwind final two days in Fiji. To make a long story short, we wound up leaving Savusavu a day early and flying to Nadi (after another 5 hour delay, although this time with other passengers, not just by ourselves!), where we experienced a feeling of walking back into civilization. It was weird being surrounded by loudspeaker announcements, kiosks, people moving in a hurry--and Nadi International is by no means a large airport. After spending 3 months so removed from everyone and everything where the pace of life is never rushed, Nadi felt like a HUGE city. As we drove in a taxi to our hostel, we couldn't believe all of the lights and restaurants and cars. Arriving at the hostel and seeing our room was un-real. Everything was so clean and soft and we had our own bathroom with HOT WATER. It was truly luxurious. We weren't even phased by the cockroach that was overturned by the side of our bed!
The day we left was sad and surreal. We were in a bit of a rush as we changed our tickets last minute, but the family prepared us a huge goodbye lunch. Nau cooked us all the foods she knows we love: homemade pizza, stirfry, salad, eggs, potatoes, there was even ice cream. It was really so generous and amazing, and the whole family sat and ate with us. We were so touched by all the family did, and saying goodbye was quite sad. We will really miss our Fijian family!
Getting to Auckland was simple and easy, and it's amazing how much life can change within a 3 hour plane ride. The weather is breezy and cool, the city is clean and bustling. We can't wait to explore New Zealand and have another completely different adventure.
