Ok. So. New Zealand is awesome. It would be impossible not to like it. For those who like cities, there is Auckland (among other cities which we have yet to visit), which is beautiful and quaint and full of things to do. For those who like the country, there are mountains all around you. For those who like the beach, there are beaches on either side of the island. From what we have seen so far, New Zealand seems to have done everything right.
We spent the last week on a farm 40 minutes south of Auckland milking cows and clearing pastures and feeding pigs and helping with whatever other farm chores needed to be done. The farm hosts were a lot of fun. They had a great sense of humor and always tried to make whatever we were doing exciting, such as spraying us in the face with milk from a cows teet while we were busy working. The farm itself was HUGE. They had over 180 milking cows, 800 sheep and around 200 beef cattle. We were fortunate enough to be there when the sheep were getting sheared since that only happens once a year. It took three guys more than ten hours to shear all of them, and these guys were so good they could shear a sheep in about one minute. Other than that we just got very dirty milking and taking care of hundreds of cows but we had an amazing time.
After a weeks of hard work we got to relax and have a little fun by going to a concert last Friday. It was a combination of Pearl Jam and Ben Harper with his new band. The concert took place in a soccer stadium that held 30,000 people and the place was packed for the show. Once Ben finished his set we met up with him backstage and hung out with him and band for quite a while talking about everything from the show to bigwave surfing and climbing redwood trees. It was nice to see a familiar face so far from home.
Now, we're in Wellington. We just got here yesterday after an eleven hour bus ride through the heart of the north island which was very scenic and relaxing. From what we've already seen of the city I can tell you that its very similar to Auckland in that its clean, fun and safe. Unfortunatley we'll only be here for one more day until we head off to our next farm to some more dirty work.
